GDD Overview

For an autobiographical game I’d want to design one around the idea of constructing a foam flinging blaster akin to a nerf gun. It has been a hobby of mine for the past few years and it is very rewarding to build something from scratch and make it work or upgrade it to how you want it rather than just buying it off a store shelf. The game would have two sections. The first part is actually constructing the blaster then the second part would be how it shoots. The premise is around learning what parts allow the blaster to function and how they might need to change around shooting harder, more accurately, or shooting further. As far as being able to build the blaster some conflict could be certain upgrade parts needing modification of the shell. For instance instead of using a plastic bolt sled you might need to use a metal bolt sled to handle a stronger spring load to make it shoot harder. However, in order to fit the metal piece you may need to cut the shell of the blaster to make it fit. For the actual shooting section a certain goal could be to shoot a target at a certain range or shoot a moving target. If your blaster is too weak or inaccurate you would have to go back to the first section and redesign it to meet your goal.

Coming back to this towards the end of the semester I realize I strayed pretty far from this idea. While at the core I think it is related to modified Nerf blasters, my goal when using these machines is to have fun. There’s no goal in mind, I’m not firing at anything in particular so the game turned into more of a sandbox shooter. You’re dropped in a world and you can roam around and do as you please.
